Banyana Banyana’s route to the Wafcon quarter-finals was far from smooth. But after doing just enough to reach the knockout stage, they want to ensure they are rejuvenated and ready for the occasion.
Banyana beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in their final group-stage match at Prince Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Tuesday night. That result ensured they finished second in Group B with four points, three behind leaders Ivory Coast.
Such was the complexity of the permutations heading into the match: a lone victory over the Lady Stallions wouldn’t have been enough on its own to seal progression, as Banyana also needed Ivory Coast to defeat Tanzania.
This was because final group standings were decided on head-to-head records in the event of a tie on points. Having lost to Tanzania in their opener, any positive result for the Twiga Stars in the final group match would have complicated matters for South Africa.
