Dave Wiseman, founder of the iconic Amashova National Classic, will be taking part in the 40th edition of the event today
As thousands of cyclists set off from Pietermaritzburg today for the 40th edition of the Amashova National Classic, the founder of the iconic race, Dave Wiseman, will be among them despite continuing treatment for cancer.
Wiseman, 72, said he would not miss the milestone anniversary of the event he established in 1986, even as he continues to battle malignant melanoma.
"I am sure I am not alone in the challenge and that there are plenty others who will be doing it quietly despite having their own issues. I plan to enjoy the 106km ride to Durban," said Wiseman.
Wiseman was diagnosed in January with malignant melanoma that had spread to several parts of his body and has since been undergoing treatment and immunotherapy. Despite his ongoing treatment, getting back on his bicycle has been one of his greatest personal achievements.
