Rena Dourou is the sole candidate for the presidency of SYRIZA’s parliamentary group ahead of a vote scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in Parliament.

The election timetable was announced by parliamentary group secretary Giannis Amanatidis. Dourou became the only candidate after Hania lawmaker Pavlos Polakis withdrew from the race.

In a statement, Polakis said he had decided to step aside amid disagreements over the party’s direction and questions surrounding support within the parliamentary group.

Polakis said he had accepted Sokratis Famellos’ victory in the party leadership election in November 2024 and continued his work within SYRIZA.

He criticized what he called the party’s “inexplicable” shift and a June central committee decision to support another party that had recently been founded and had not published its policy positions.
