As part of the coordinated regulatory framework, the Central Bank of Nigeria is proceeding with the establishment of a regulatory sandbox for virtual assets.

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination, 2026, establishing a new framework aimed at harmonising the regulation of virtual assets in Nigeria while strengthening cooperation among financial, revenue and capital market regulators.

The State House disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the Executive Order was signed pursuant to Section 5 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and takes immediate effect.

The Presidency said the Order is intended to "harmonise the regulation of virtual assets, strengthen cooperation among the nation's financial, revenue and capital markets agencies, protect citizens from fraud, and safeguard the integrity of the financial system while enabling responsible innovation."
