Everyone and Their Mom Is Making a Sunscreen Stick. These Are the Best.

I like to have a sunscreen wardrobe, a variety of formulas and formats on hand for different activities and areas of the body. I always have a stick in the mix. It’s usually not my first layer of protection — I stick to a lotion for that — but it’s great for reapplication and for tricky spots like the hairline, ears, tattoos, and scars.

I also find sunscreen sticks to be an easy sell for kids. My 8-year-old loves to apply them herself. New York City–based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner once told me that four passes across the face should give you enough protection, so I always make sure she does that.

While sunscreen sticks aren’t new, there seems to have been a sudden boom in launches, and brands have really perfected the formulas. They’re slicker, thinner, more invisible, more moisturizing, and, in some cases, even cooling. We tested a bunch of best sellers and the latest launches. Here are our picks.
