Even though I know that wearing SPF is essential, that doesn’t mean I love the feeling of rubbing in goopy, greasy lotion sunscreen. Thankfully, there are now plenty of face sunscreens on the market with lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas, but for body sunscreens it’s a bit of a different story. I thought I was stuck either slathering ooze-y lotion all over my body, or relying on a spray that might provide uneven coverage. Enter: Sun Bum’s roll-on sunscreen, the answer to all my SPF prayers.I first learned about this nifty little sunscreen bottle from HuffPost Shopping’s managing editor of commerce Emily Ruane when it went on sale last year. Ruane is a mom of two young girls, and recommended the Sun Bum roll-on for its ease of use with children. “I borrowed this from a friend on a scorching park day and marveled at the smooth and thorough application as I used the rolling tip to rub sunscreen all over my daughters’ faces and arms,” she wrote. “It’s not easy to put SPF on wiggly preschoolers and this make it a little more seamless. I actually bought a similar roll-on product from another drugstore sun care brand a few weeks back when my local Walgreens was sold out of the Sun Bum, and it was definitely nowhere near as functional as this stuff.”I don’t have kids, but I was intrigued by the roll-on application for use on myself. The thought of being able to apply SPF (or more importantly, reapply while I’m out and about) without needing to pour a puddle of greasy lotion into my palm was more than enticing. I ordered a bottle that day, and while I’ve tried out different face sunscreens in the almost-year since, I doubt I’ll ever abandon my beloved roll-on when it comes to applying SPF to the rest of my body.AmazonThis sunscreen boasts broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection and is infused with vitamin E.“This is the first sunscreen I’ve actually used consistently when I’m out in the sun, because it’s so easy to apply evenly. Roll it on and rub it in!” one shopper said, and I’ve had the same experience. While the sunscreen itself is lotion and requires rubbing in, the roller ball distributes a thin layer that absorbs in basically seconds. Yes, my hands are left with sunscreen on them, but it’s nowhere near as gross-feeling as the thick lotion from a regular squeeze tube of SPF.I’m also able to apply the exact amount that I need in the exact places I need it, unlike an unwieldy spray. If I need more in one area, I can just roll the ball over that spot again with a new layer. Easy-peasy.The sunscreen’s broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection has left reviewers “sunburn free” when used properly, possibly because the packaging makes reapplication a breeze. On top of that, the formula is infused with skin-nourishing vitamin E, is gentle on my sensitive skin and is free of oxybenzone or octinoxate.Plus, it smells nice without being overwhelming. The brand describes as it smelling like summer, and reviewers have compared it to “vacation,” “yummy bananas” and “coconuts and dreams on the beach.”Parents appreciate it for applying sunscreen on their kids, or even letting their kids put it on themselves because it’s that easy. Travelers love it because it’s the perfect size to toss in their carry-on and take it on the go. Makeup-wearers adore it for acting as a primer and not feeling greasy or nasty. No matter your sunscreen habits, trust me: You want this. It’s the first sunscreen I’ve not only not minded putting on, but actually enjoyed.Promising Sun Bum roll-on reviews:“We seriously don’t want to ever spray or have to squeeze out and rub in any other sunscreen again! This packaging design is absolutely brilliant! It’s so easy to use and to get too hard to reach places, it’s great for a little spot touchups, super portable without a worry of something leaking or exploding in your bag. And even when rolling on slightly Sandy skin or in very human climates, the roller ball never got stuck, leaked out, Access product, etc. It is seriously the holy Grail of sunscreen! And to boot, I love Sun Bum’s, fragrance, ingredients, ethics, etc.” — CBrad“We have a family history of skin cancer, so finding a good sunscreen is a must for us. This is our go to sunscreen - and the only one my 6 year old will allow me to use on him. It works SO well and it lasts. The roller-ball applicator really helps to apply it evenly and once rubbed in, it leaves no residue. It has a nice scent that is not overwhelming.” — Fawn F“We bought the roll on sunscreen to send with my daughter to day camp. She loves it, it’s easy for her to apply herself and she hasn’t come home burned after spending lots of time outside so I think it’s doing it’s job!” — Laura L“I am a huge fan of Sun Bum but have always used the spray, this is a game changer. This will be my new favorite, I actually love that you have control over where it goes and you can see where it went. I comes out white and rubs in easily not showing any color. I found it easier to apply than a lotion or even the spray. Highly recommend.” — Richard L. Stagg“Works really well and rolls on easy, even though it’s thick - I also use it everyday to roll on the back of my hands to keep from drying out and aging. Rubs in so well and doesn’t leave a white cast. It smells sooo good too, like the beach. Definitely recommend 🌞” — BrandieThe original version of this story was published on HuffPost at an earlier date.
