Veteran flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis will lead the Stormers XXIII in their opening Currie Cup match against Griquas on Friday evening in Cape Town.

The Stormers XXIII will usher in a new era in the Currie Cup on Friday evening at DHL Stadium (7.05pm kick-off), and there should be no ghosts of the past haunting them when they take on defending champions Griquas.

Following the rebrand from the traditional Western Province, the Cape side will be determined to start the domestic campaign by breaking Griquas’ recent hold over them in the competition.

Since 2021, Griquas have won seven of the eight meetings against WP, but playing under the Stormers banner, the newly named team – a blend of experienced campaigners and exciting young talent – will look to halt that run as they begin their bid for the title.

“It’s an interesting position to sit in a Stormers jersey and be the underdogs for this match,” newly appointed head coach Tom Dawson-Squibb said when announcing his team.
