A mine shell has been discovered in the sea area of the Port of Thessaloniki, authorities said on Thursday.

The military material was found Thursday morning at a depth of 31 meters during a re-inspection of the seabed as part of expansion works for the port’s 6th pier.

The Thessaloniki Port Authority has informed the competent authorities to carry out the necessary procedures.

Similar discoveries of old naval mines and unexploded military material have occurred in Greek coastal waters in recent years, often linked to wartime remnants from World War II.
