Atletico Madrid has set its sights on one of Barcelona’s most promising young talents. The target is Marc Bernal, a 19-year-old midfielder who has emerged as a key piece of Barcelona’s future plans. According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Atletico has floated the idea of acquiring Bernal as part of a potential exchange deal involving striker Julian Alvarez. Barcelona has reportedly rejected the proposition outright, deeming Bernal untouchable.
The deal that isn’t happening (yet)
Atletico’s interest in Bernal is part of a broader, aggressive rebuilding strategy under manager Diego Simeone that has seen the club sign 16 new players across the last two transfer windows. The proposed framework, packaging Bernal into a deal centered on Alvarez, suggests Atletico views the young Spaniard as a cornerstone-caliber talent.
The Bernardo Silva wrinkle
Both clubs are simultaneously pursuing the same free agent. Bernardo Silva’s contract with Manchester City expires on June 30, 2026, making him available without a transfer fee. Both Atletico and Barcelona want him. Atletico isn’t putting all its eggs in the Bernal-or-Silva basket, either. The club has also been linked with Morten Hjulmand and Matt O’Riley as potential midfield additions. O’Riley has been reportedly valued at around €30 million.
