Firefighting teams remain on-site, committed to extinguishing the fire completely and ensuring the safety of the surrounding community.
Crews remain at the New England Landfill Road Site in Pietermaritzburg to monitor hotspots after a fire at the premises on Monday was contained.
The Msunduzi Municipality said the a team was on-site to monitor deep-seated hotspots and to conduct ongoing air quality monitoring to ensure public safety.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla confirmed earlier this week.
“Through a coordinated effort involving Msunduzi Fire Rescue Services, Water and Sanitation, uMgungundlovu District Fire and Rescue Services, and supporting stakeholders, the fire has been successfully contained and is under control,” the municipality said in an update.
