Small pockets of white smoke are still visible at the New England Road landfill site, indicating isolated areas of residual combustion.
The fire that ignited at the New England Landfill Road Site on Monday, at approximately 2am, has been successfully contained.
While the situation is under control, crews remain on-site managing deep-seated hotspots and conducting ongoing air quality monitoring to ensure public safety.
“Through a coordinated effort involving Msunduzi Fire Rescue Services, Water and Sanitation, uMgungundlovu District Fire and Rescue Services, and supporting stakeholders, the fire has been successfully contained and is under control,” the municipality said in an update on Wednesday evening.
“While the fire is no longer spreading, it remains deep-seated beneath the waste mass, making it complex to extinguish completely. Excavation and suppression operations are continuing in a controlled and systematic manner to expose and extinguish the underlying hotspots. Small pockets of white smoke remain visible, indicating isolated areas of residual combustion.”
