Athletics South Africa (ASA) has thrown its weight behind KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) in its ongoing battle with the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) over the staging dates for the 2027 ultra-marathon.
The backing comes despite the CMA issuing a statement on Wednesday firmly anchoring its timeline: “Recent inaccurate and incomplete statements from various bodies and media necessitates the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) confirming that the 2027 race will take place on 13 June 2027.”
However, KZNA maintains it has not sanctioned the 2027 race and has even threatened legal action against the CMA. This latest friction develops against the backdrop of the CMA already cutting ties with KZNA over disputes regarding the control of the organisation.
In an effort to address the internal turmoil, CMA chairperson Mark Leathers confirmed that a CMA Special General Meeting (SGM) is scheduled to take place on August 1.
