The Comrades Marathon Association has issued a statement confirmed that the 2027 race will go ahead on Sunday, June 13. However, this is being challenged by Athletics South Africa.
The battle for control of the Comrades Marathon has entered another turbulent chapter after the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) and Athletics South Africa (ASA), backed by KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA), issued conflicting statements over the date of the race's historic 100th edition in 2027.
At first glance, the disagreement appears to centre around whether next year's centenary race will take place on June 13. In reality, however, the dispute is the latest front in a much broader governance war that has simmered for months and has already found its way into the courts.
On Wednesday, the CMA announced that the 100th edition of the world's oldest and biggest ultramarathon would be held on June 13, 2027.
"Planning and permissions relating to the 100th running are moving full steam ahead," CMA chairperson Mark Leathers said, adding that the organisation remained committed to working with all stakeholders.
