Two men charged in connection with a blast at a truck repair shop in western Attica that killed one worker and injured 10 others, two of them critically, have been released pending trial under conditions.
The suspects – the owner of the business and the lessee of the propane truck that exploded – face felony charges of causing an explosion and arson endangering human life, as well as misdemeanor charges, including grievous bodily harm through negligence and failing to implement required safety measures. Both denied the allegations.
The workshop owner apologized to the victims’ families, saying he was devastated by the incident. According to his testimony, the tanker had remained at the garage overnight because a replacement part needed for repairs was unavailable.
The second defendant reportedly said he had informed both the workshop owner and the propane company that the tanker contained propane, arguing the fire was caused by a leak involving other flammable material elsewhere in the facility.
The accident occurred on July 9 in the industrial zone of Aspropyrgos while two workers were carrying out hot work at the site. It involved two successive explosions and a fire that destroyed two neighboring businesses.
