For thousands of South African children, the school day begins without one of the most basic tools needed for learning: a proper desk.
According to Department of Basic Education data contained in a National Council of Provinces (NCOP) written reply to Question 341 dated 23 April 2025, 10 669 schools nationally had reported furniture shortages, with 2 324 695 units required.
The data shows that 837 649 units had been delivered to 5 309 schools by the third quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, representing 36% of the total identified need and 44.4% of the 2024/25 target.
For learners, the shortage means many classrooms continue to operate without enough furniture, creating an environment where children struggle to find a comfortable place to sit, write and engage with lessons.
