Shares in the industrial sector declined despite signs of economic resilience. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said manufacturing activity accelerated in July, with the Empire State Manufacturing Survey rising to 15.6 from June's 5.7.

Cintas reported higher profit and sales in the fourth quarter, as it prepares to close its acquisition of UniFirst. The maker of uniforms and cleaning supplies for businesses posted a profit of $1.26 a share, compared with $1.09 a share a year earlier.

JPMorgan Chase said it would put $24 million in investments, loans and grants to work in submarine manufacturing in Philadelphia, supporting a Trump administration push to boost U.S. shipbuilding.
