Shares of industrial and transportation companies rose slightly as traders bet an economic boom would continue in the industrial economy.

Retail sales fell 0.6% in July, heightening the impression of a bifurcated economy. While the artificial-intelligence boom has spurred business investment in the U.S., bolstering the fortunes of manufacturers and freight companies, U.S. consumers may be slowing their spending following years of onerous inflation rates.

The union representing Canadian auto workers said Jeep maker Stellantis had disclosed its intention to sell a Toronto-area factory that's been the focus of a dispute between Ottawa and the auto maker.
