Shares of industrial and transportation companies ticked up after mixed economic data.

Private companies added a net 44,000 jobs in July after adding a revised 95,000 jobs in June, according to survey from payroll firm ADP. The anemic July growth lagged economists' expectations.

Caterpillar shares gave back some of their recent gains but are still up more than twofold in the last 12 months as the machinery maker's generators have become popular among data-center developers.
