MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan wants to look into the government’s readiness to protect the agriculture sector and ensure the country’s food supply ahead of El Niño, which is forecast to worsen and persist until early next year.
Earlier this week, Pangilinan filed Senate Resolution No. 515 directing the agriculture committee, which he chairs, to determine whether the budgets and contingency plans of key government agencies were sufficient and ready for the weather phenomenon.

The hearing will assess the preparedness of the Department of Agriculture, the National Irrigation Administration, the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to roll out key interventions to counter the effects of El Niño, such as water management, seed distribution, credit assistance, and other food supply contingency measures.FEATURED STORIES
