A record audience gathered to hear one of the founders of the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club recount how seven local Sea Scouts built what has become one of South Africa's leading surf lifesaving clubs.
Fish Hoek Valley Museum curator Sue Maude said Duffell, who has lived in Fish Hoek since 1945, took the audience on a journey through the club's history, from its humble beginnings in the late 1950s to its position today as one of South Africa's most successful surf lifesaving clubs.
He explained that the idea for a local surf lifesaving club was first sparked in 1955 and 1956 when his Sea Scout patrol leader, Buck Buchanan, left the 1st Fish Hoek Sea Scouts to join the newly established Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club.
In 1963, the Fish Hoek Municipality allocated the club a site on which to build its first wooden prefabricated clubhouse.
