A group of current and former Meta staff are suing the Facebook parent over the alleged use of AI tools to select staff for termination in mass layoffs that began earlier this year.

The tools disproportionately selected people who had taken leave due to pregnancy, medical conditions or to care for family members, because these people had less recorded performance data to draw from, alleges the lawsuit.

The complaint filed by 26 anonymous people in Oakland, California federal court on Monday, is seeking a preliminary ruling blocking Meta from completing the layoffs while the claims are pursued in private arbitration.
