A group of 26 current and former employees of Meta Platforms has filed a lawsuit accusing the social media giant of using artificial intelligence-powered systems to unfairly identify workers with disabilities, those on medical leave, and employees with family caregiving responsibilities for mass layoffs.
The lawsuit, filed late Monday at a federal court in Oakland, California, alleges that Meta relied on AI-assisted tools and productivity metrics to determine which employees would be dismissed during its latest round of job cuts, resulting in discrimination against vulnerable workers.
According to the complaint, the affected employees were informed in May that their positions would be eliminated beginning July 22.
Reuters reports that the plaintiffs are asking the court to issue a preliminary injunction preventing Meta from carrying out the layoffs while their legal claims proceed through private arbitration.
