Sir, – One cannot but be moved by Michael Gleeson’s letter (“Was it for this”, July 13th) concerning the plight of the pensioner couple attending a large Dublin hospital.Reflecting on the scandalous imposition of a clamp on their car and the resulting €120 release fee, I am compelled to observe that the pursuit of profit by outside contractors on a HSE site is private enterprise, which should be disavowed.Indeed, I believe this unfortunate incident leans into the very argument advanced by David Gordon (“Private versus Public sectors”, July 13th). There is a place for profit-taking in our economy, but it should never be at the expense of vulnerable citizens presenting to the State for help. – Yours, etc,EUGENE McMAHON,Moycullen, Co Galway.
