Booming demand for gas turbines from US data centre operators has sparked a global price surge that has pushed the cost of gas-fired power generation above small home batteries for the first time, a trend the federal science agency believes will continue.
The change means it is now cheaper for four-hour home batteries to fill the electricity demand between 5pm and 9pm than it is to have gas peaking, according to the latest CSIRO GenCost report released on Wednesday.
