Former president Jacob Zuma’s visit to India alongside Ajay Gupta has drawn scrutiny, but the MK Party says personal engagements should not be linked to the organisation.
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has defended former president Jacob Zuma’s visit to India and his meeting with members of the Gupta family, saying the trip was a private engagement and unrelated to the party.
The response follows Zuma’s visit to the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand in late June, where he was photographed at the Siddhpeeth Shri Dakshin Kali Mandir in Haridwar alongside Ajay Gupta, one of the Gupta brothers linked to allegations of state capture in South Africa.
Indian media reported that Zuma was accompanied by Ajay Gupta, who was described as a disciple of the ashram, as well as South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Professor Anil Sooklal.
The presence of Ajay Gupta, who remains wanted by South African authorities, has drawn scrutiny and renewed questions about Zuma’s relationship with the Gupta family.
