FORMER President Jacob Zuma’s visit to India ahead of the local government elections has ignited debate at home.

The timing, coinciding with the June 30 deadline for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa and overlapping with protests he was not physically present for, has led to competing interpretations of his motives.

Adding to the sensitivity, the presence of South Africa’s High Commissioner in India at some of Zuma’s engagements and meetings that reportedly included Atul Gupta, who remains a fugitive wanted by South African authorities on corruption charges.

While history may hold various perspectives on the business dealings of the Gupta family in South Africa, the current legal reality is unambiguous: The individuals in question are on the run from the South African justice system.
