Britain's most famous gardening expert, Monty Don, has shared a crucial July gardening task that could ensure beautiful and vibrant blooms in the autumn months.08:18, 14 Jul 2026As summer reaches its peak across Britain, gardeners up and down the country are undoubtedly tackling essential tasks to ensure their outdoor spaces are properly prepared for the cooler autumn and winter months ahead.‌Those hoping to achieve stunning displays and gorgeous blooms come autumn are being encouraged to complete one vital gardening task this July, according to the nation's most beloved horticultural expert.‌Renowned horticulturist and BBC Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don is widely regarded as Britain's most celebrated gardener, and his beloved cottage garden - Longmeadow, nestled in the Herefordshire village of Ivington - is considered one of the finest and most well-known in the country.‌Amongst the many things Monty Don is celebrated for is his wealth of practical gardening advice, which he regularly shares on his personal gardening blog.Over the years, the horticultural authority has offered a wealth of tips and tricks for passionate gardeners - and there's one particular task he's urging green-fingered enthusiasts to tackle this July in order to achieve breathtaking blooms this autumn, reports the Express.‌Reflecting on the magic of July, Monty writes on his personal gardening blog: "The days are long and there is none of the slight weariness in the garden that can shadow August. It is the month of school holidays, and the garden flows and swells with both floral and edible harvests."Roses are still looking good at the beginning of the month and the clematis switch from the big blooms of the early summer types (group II) to the more abundant, albeit smaller flowers of the viticella and other late-flowering (group III) ones. Tender annuals such as cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers and tithonias hit their strife and crocosmia, agapanthus, lilies and dahlias are all summer-flowering bulbs that enrich the borders."‌July's key gardening taskMonty Don advises: "Early flowering perennials such as oriental poppies, delphiniums and hardy geraniums such as G. phaeum, should all be cut back to the ground to encourage fresh regrowth and repeat flowering in a couple of months' time."He goes on to explain how this "creates space for tender annuals and perennials in the border". The Gardeners' World host adds: "Remove all cut material to the compost heap, weed around the base of the plants, water if necessary and do not plant too close to them so that they have light and space to regrow and flower again at the end of summer."Article continues belowFlowering plants aren't the only thing demanding your attention this month, with the gardening expert also offering essential advice on hedges: "By the end of the month birds have all fledged and left their nests, so hedge cutting can begin, bringing back a crispness to the garden that restores a sense of vitality and provides a framework for late-summer shagginess in the borders."According to Monty, the majority of wild flower meadows can be safely cut back by the end of July. The horticulturist adds that the most crucial step is to "remove all the grass, raking up every last piece to compost, so that it will not enrich the grass and thus limit next year's wild flower display."
