The Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies (HIAS), marking five years since its founding by leading Greek scientists abroad, will host Greece’s first European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence in Science on July 16-17 at the Acropolis Museum.
The event will bring researchers from Google DeepMind and professors from Harvard, MIT, the Max Planck Institutes and ETH Zurich to Athens. More than 700 people applied worldwide and 200 were selected, including graduate students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers and industry professionals. Over 100 received scholarships covering travel costs.
Harvard computational science professor Petros Koumoutsakos, a HIAS founder, said Greece has “excellent potential” in well-trained people but lacks the strong computing infrastructure needed for AI development.
Elias Cueto, who chairs Spain’s National AI Strategy, said Spain and Greece both lack the giant private companies driving change in the US and must, instead, pursue a fundamentally different model.
