Greece’s umbrella civil servants’ union is holding a five-hour work stoppage on Tuesday, to protest a government proposal to introduce constitutional changes that will overturn civil servants’ right to job permanency.
ADEDY has declared a work stoppage from 11 a.m. until the end of the working day, while calling on civil servants to participate en masse in the rally that will take place at noon at Propylaia, in central Athens. A march to the Parliament will follow, together with student associations.
“By revising Article 103, [the government] attempts to abolish the permanence of civil servants, that is, to abolish the state’s responsibility to staff public services with permanent personnel, as well as to link work to reactionary evaluation and the constitutionalization of the relevant disciplinary proceedings,” the union says o a press release. “The goal is a frightened and submissive employee, who will implement anti-popular policies without objection. The attempted changes are a cause of war.”
Governing New Democracy will propose a revision of Article 103 of the Constitution, which governs civil service employment, to modernize the framework for the public administration and apply it across the board to all civil servants.
