The state government said the lagoon water level has risen by approximately one metre, a situation it described as the major factor responsible for the flooding witnessed in several locations following recent rainfall.
The Lagos State government has blamed the flooding being experienced in parts of the state on a significant increase in the water level of the Lagos lagoon, saying the development has disrupted the normal discharge of stormwater from drainage channels and caused temporary inundation of roads and streets.
The state government said the lagoon water level has risen by approximately one metre, a situation it described as the major factor responsible for the flooding witnessed in several locations following recent rainfall.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, explaining that the elevated water level in the lagoon has slowed the movement of stormwater into the natural water body.
According to the commissioner, "The flooding currently being experienced in some parts of Lagos is largely attributable to a significant rise in the lagoon water level, which has increased by approximately one-metre."
