Washington, D.C. — The Washington Oxi Day Foundation today unveiled a one-minute video revealing distinguished Hellenes whose leadership, generosity, and commitment have, for 15 years, lifted onto today’s stage of world leaders the story of the Greek people’s courageous WWII Oxi Day miracle that led to the defeat of Adolph Hitler. They enable the awarding of an Oxi Day Courage Award each year to a man and a woman who each exhibit today the courage displayed by the Greek people on Oxi Day.
They also present each year the Metropolitan Chrysostomos Award to an individual who shows today the courage shown by the Metropolitan’s response to the Nazis’ demand for a list of the Jews on the Greek Island of Zakynthos. He sent the Jews to mountain villages where they were all saved and gave to the Nazis a list of names that included only the Metropolitan’s and the Mayor’s.
The Hellenes who make all this possible are led by the Logothetis Family, George Marcus, John Calamos, the Bouras Foundation, the Vasileos Haseotes Family, Michael Psaros, Dennis Mehiel, Pete and Danialle Karmanos, Bill Matagaras, Dean Metropoulos, Gerry Ranglas, and the Pedas Family.
These Hellenes have made His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, American presidents, prime ministers of various countries, former US Senate Majority Leader and Republican nominee for President Bob Dole, world humanitarian Bono, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize Vladimir Kara-Murza, to name a few, aware of the Greek people’s miraculous WWII courage that led to Hitler’s defeat.
