Members of the All India Kisan Sangh (AIKS) on Monday staged a demonstration in Coimbatore demanding waiver of crop loans forwarded through cooperative banks.The loans should be waived by the TVK Government in accordance with its poll promise, they said.Farmers in Coimbatore district who had availed themselves of the loans have faced enormous setback due to the challenges of climate change, labour shortage, high wages, steep rise in cost of fertilizers, damage to crops caused by wild animals, water shortage, and rise in fuel costs, a petition submitted by AIKS functionaries to the authorities of Coimbatore District Central Cooperative Bank said.The extent of crop loan waiver announced by the government earlier and modified later was not sufficient for revival of the agricultural sector. The instruction issued to farmers to repay pending loans with the warning of levy of interest has caused distress, the petition said.The farmers were anticipating a positive outcome from the State government, the protesters said, citing the instance of the complete waiver of crop loans effected by Maharashtra State Government.Until the Chief Minister announces the complete waiver, the Cooperative banks must desist from forcing farmers to repay the pending loans, the petition emphasised.
