A new open-air theatrical production exploring the life and ideas of ancient Greek philosopher Socrates will be staged in Athens during the summer of 2026, beneath the Acropolis.
“Socrates: My Life,” presented in English by cultural organization Sound & Picture, will take place at the Athens University History Museum (5 Tholou) in the Plaka district. Inspired by the structure and spirit of ancient Greek tragedy, the production follows Socrates from his philosophical discussions with students and his views on love and knowledge to his trial, imprisonment and execution.
The performance combines theater, poetry, original music, dance and the traditional presence of a chorus to portray Socrates as a human figure rather than a distant historical icon. Director Panos Angelopoulos said the production aims to present a man who “loves, questions, struggles and seeks truth.”
