In a bid to curb rising air pollution and promote sustainable urban mobility, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg launched a new initiative, where he urged officials, employees, and citizens to adopt cycling every Monday.Leading by example, on Monday morning, Mr. Garg commuted from his official residence to the GVMC head office on a bicycle. Several municipal officials and staff members joined the Commissioner in the ride, signalling their support for the campaign titled, 'Let’s Control Pollution... Let’s Use Bicycles.'Speaking to the media after arriving at his office, Mr. Garg emphasised that the shift to ‘pedal power’ is a multi-approach to modern urban challenges. “Cycling is one of the most effective ways to promote public health, conserve fuel, and protect our environment,” he added.Focus on health and environmentThe Commissioner highlighted that the initiative is designed to address both individual well-being and civic responsibility. He noted that regular cycling contributes to improved cardiovascular health, enhanced physical fitness, and better mental well-being, while acting as a preventive measure against lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity.“Reducing our dependence on motor vehicles is essential to lowering the city’s carbon footprint. By choosing to cycle, every citizen contributes to a greener, cleaner environment,” Mr. Garg added.‘Cycling Day’ appealTaking the initiative beyond the municipal office, the Commissioner appealed to private institutions, educational establishments, and voluntary organisations to observe every Monday as “Cycling Day.” He expressed his vision for a “Green Vizag – Healthy Vizag” and urged the public to carry the message of pollution control to every household in the city.
