An alleged serial thief accused of stealing water taps from Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital over several weeks has been arrested after CCTV operators spotted him on the roof of one of the hospital’s buildings.

The Gauteng Department of Health said the incident occurred at about 7.20pm on Saturday when CCTV operators monitoring the hospital observed a male suspect on the roof of the Main Kitchen building.

Security personnel were immediately alerted and responded swiftly, apprehending the suspect outside the Main Kitchen.

According to the department, preliminary investigations suggest the suspect allegedly gained access through the Main Kitchen plant room behind the Dental Unit after a burglar door in the area had reportedly been left unsecured, allowing access to the kitchen balcony.

Following his arrest, the suspect allegedly led security personnel to an area outside Ward 15 where several hospital water taps had been concealed.
