Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital enhances security after theft of water taps.
The Gauteng Department of Health has condemned an incident of theft and vandalism at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital after a suspected thief was arrested on the hospital premises and allegedly found in possession of stolen water taps believed to have been removed from various parts of the facility.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, July 11, 2026, at approximately 7:20pm, when hospital CCTV operators monitoring the sprawling Soweto-based hospital spotted a man on the roof of the Main Kitchen building.
According to the department, security personnel were immediately dispatched and managed to apprehend the suspect outside the Main Kitchen shortly afterwards.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect allegedly gained access to the area through the Main Kitchen plant room located behind the Dental Unit. The department said an unsecured burglar door is believed to have provided entry to the kitchen balcony.
