A German air force aircraft will transport Lithuania’s rescue contingent home from Venezuela following the completion of its humanitarian mission, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said Sunday.
Lithuanian Chief of Defence Gen. Raimundas Vaikšnoras said the arrangement was agreed during a meeting in Berlin last week with his German counterpart, Gen. Carsten Breuer.
According to Vaikšnoras, the decision will help ensure the safe return of the Lithuanian rescuers and highlights the close military cooperation between Lithuania and Germany.
“I am convinced that our cooperation will continue to expand across all operational domains: land, air, sea, information and cyberspace,” Vaikšnoras said. “The more we train and plan together in peacetime, the stronger our collective deterrence and readiness to defend NATO becomes.”
Lithuanian rescue teams were deployed to Venezuela after devastating earthquakes struck the country in June, killing more than 4,000 people and leaving thousands injured or missing.
