A group of students, wearing uniforms of the government schools at Kodali near Jayankondam staged a protest on Saturday along with the residents of the village, demanding the closure of a Tasmac outlet.Claiming that the presence of the outlet had made several people addicted to liquor, the protesters blocked the traffic at Kodali on Anaikarai and Kodalikaruppur road. On information, the T. Palur police and the Tasmac officials rushed to the spot and began negotiation with the protesters. While the officials sought two months to close the outlet, the protesters refused to budge. As a mark of registering their protest, the protesters, including boys and girls, ran towards the Tasmac outlet and vandalised the barrier. Some of them indulged in stone throwing on the outlet. A tussle ensued between the protesters and the police, when they tried to control them. The officials thereafter resumed negotiations with the protesters who dispersed from the spot following a promise that the Tasmac outlet would be closed immediately.
