Residents of Observatory say they want clarity over the development
A private sports development on state-owned school land in Observatory has sparked questions over transparency, public participation and how much neighbouring residents were told before the project was approved.
Residents living near the Mary Kihn School for the Deaf have formally requested Western Cape Education Department provide written reasons for their approval of a proposal to develop five-a-side football and padel facilities on the school grounds.
The residents insist they are not opposed to the school being improved, but say the process has left them with serious concerns.
“We are not opposed to the development and improvement of the school, and as such, would like to emphasise that we are supportive of the school and its learners, and recognise the importance of improving their facilities and financial sustainability,” a spokesperson for the residents said.
