Jayden Adams, the South African midfielder who represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks ago, has died at the age of 25. The South African Football Association confirmed the news on July 11, sending shockwaves through the global soccer community and prompting an outpouring of tributes across social media.

No cause of death has been officially reported. SAFA has requested privacy for the Adams family during this difficult time.

A career cut impossibly short

Born in Cape Town on May 5, 2001, Adams had built a trajectory that most young footballers only dream about. He earned a place at Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the most decorated clubs in South African domestic soccer, and parlayed that form into a spot on the national team roster for the biggest tournament on the planet.

Adams started in South Africa’s group-stage match against Czechia on June 18, a performance made all the more remarkable by its timing. His grandmother, Marianna Adams, had passed away just one day earlier, on June 17. He played anyway.
