The organisation argued that Sodiq's detention reflected a disturbing pattern allegedly adopted by the DSS.
The Yoruba socio-political group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has condemned the continued detention of journalist Zainab Sodiq, accusing the Department of State Services (DSS) of abandoning its constitutional responsibility of protecting Nigeria's national security in favour of targeting journalists, activists and government critics.
The group, in a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Convener, Olusola Badero, and released through its Home Director, Princess Balogun, demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Sodiq, alongside adequate compensation for her unlawful harassment and detention.
According to the organisation, the DSS has become "a tool of political oppression" used against citizens who criticise President Bola Tinubu and other political office holders, rather than focusing on terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups threatening Nigeria's security.
"The DSS has become a political tool running after journalists and activists instead of bandits and terrorists who constitute real threats to our national security.
