Human rights lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately release Zainab Sodiq, journalist and media aide to activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, describing her detention as unjustified and an "overkill."
Ejimakor made the appeal in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he criticised the secret police over Sodiq's arrest, noting that possession of a commercial drone does not amount to a criminal offence.
"I hereby appeal to the DG DSS to free Zainab Sodiq, a media aide to Omoyole Sowore," Ejimakor wrote.
"She is not a criminal by the mere possession of an ordinary commercial drone, which is rampant amongst videographers in Nigeria. Her arrest comes across as an overkill against Sowore."
