This week, as we approach Bastille Day on le 14 Juillet, I feature four wines from the Languedoc, the largest wine-producing region in the world. Three are from family-owned properties, the fourth a co-operative. The Grande Courtade is made by the Famille Fabre, who own four properties in Corbières and one in Minervois. As well as making a solid, comprehensive range of wines, they offer quirky tours and an escape game in the ancient Château de Luc. See famillefabre.com for details. The Le Versant Viognier is made by Foncalieu, a leading innovative co-operative with 600 members. Each wine in the Le Versant range offers a textbook example of a grape variety. All are reasonably priced. Domaine Gayda was set up by two English men and a South African more than 20 years ago. The estate produces a bewildering array of wines – all very good – but Chemin de Moscou is its flagship wine. A blend of syrah, cinsault and grenache from La Livinière and the Roussillon, it recently released its 20th vintage. I tasted six vintages going back to 2010 and all were in very good shape.I have featured Gérard Bertrand before. A former rugby player and true son of the Languedoc, he now owns 16 estates, all farmed biodynamically, in the region. “We have been offering customers the same wine for too long,” he told me. The orange wine below is one of a number of innovations.
