The BBC licence fee is a 'busted flush', the Culture Secretary said today as she cast doubt on the long-term future of the TV tax.
Lisa Nandy said she agrees with the BBC director-general, Matt Brittin, the former Google boss who said the corporation is 'held back' by its main source of funding for its television, radio and online services.
Discussing the longevity of the BBC's licence fee before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on Wednesday, Mr Brittin said it was 'no longer fit for purpose'.
Asked if she agreed with Matt Brittin's view that the model is a 'busted flush', Ms Nandy told BBC Radio 4's Today: 'I do actually and I've thought (so) for a long time.
'The licence fee in its current form is unsustainable simply because there are fewer and fewer people paying it.'
