Heritage campaigners are fighting to preserve the unique venue beneath Hotel Kyjev.
It is Friday evening and a queue has formed outside Hotel Kyjev in the heart of Bratislava. It includes students as well as people in their fifties, all heading to Luna Bar. In high spirits, they sing a hit from their youth as they wait impatiently to enter the popular underground club. They have no idea that Luna’s future is under threat.
Hotel Kyjev, owned by property developer Lordship, is due to undergo reconstruction. Once the extensive renovation is complete, the building will once again operate as a hotel. As Luna Bar forms part of the complex, it too will be affected by the work.
The developer’s plans show that Luna Bar will not remain in its current location. It is to be replaced by underground parking spaces.
“Moving parking underground is one of the prerequisites for ensuring that the area above ground no longer serves primarily cars and can be opened up more to people,” said Lordship executive director Peter Dovala.
