Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that it would increase the penalty for those causing nuisance to fellow passengers. According to a press release, CMRL will levy a fine on those who listen to music or play videos without earphones, use a speaker or engage in loud conversations under Section 59 of the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act 2002. Now, after a recent amendment via the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, the penalty will go up from the earlier fine of ₹500 to a fine of up to ₹2,500, the release said. Also, the passenger may be removed from the Metro Rail premises by authorised personnel. CMRL has said, commuters should use headphones and not converse in a loud tone.
