For the last couple of days, long-distance trains passing via Villivakkam railway station have been operating at a reduced speed. This is to facilitate the construction of an underground tunnel at Villivakkam for the Chennai Metro Rail’s 118.9-km phase II project.
Riddled with delays, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s (CMRL) tunnelling work to build an underground network connecting Villivakkam Metro station with Villivakkam Bus Terminus Metro station began recently. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) named Marutham was launched near the Villivakkam railway station and has been tunnelling under the station tracks.
