Thousands of children from underprivileged communities across South Africa are set to benefit from improved access to specialist eye care when the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital officially opens its first dedicated Eye & Vision Centre on Mandela Day.

The facility, launched in partnership with EyeCare4Kids Africa, marks a major investment in paediatric eye health and aims to expand access to specialised vision care for children who would otherwise struggle to receive treatment.

The permanent centre is the result of more than two years of collaboration between the hospital and the non-profit organisation.

Even before the official opening, EyeCare4Kids Africa has already screened more than 58,000 children, conducted comprehensive eye examinations and provided over 5,000 prescription glasses to children from underserved communities.

Hospital officials say the new centre will ensure children continue receiving world-class eye care at one of Africa’s leading specialist children’s hospitals.
