Join the 20th Annual Women’s Humanity Walk to combat gender-based violence

Soraya Salie, founder member of Bonteheuwel Walking Ladies, participated in the debut Women’s Humanity Walk which spotlights gender-based violence.

Artscape Theatre plans to hold its 20th annual Women’s Humanity Walk this year to spotlight gender-based violence as part of a festival aimed at “transforming remembrance into responsibility”.

The walk is scheduled for National Women’s Day on 9 August, commemorating the 70th anniversary of this historic walk. This annual public holiday marks the date in 1956 when almost 20,000 women marched against apartheid pass laws in Pretoria.

An Artscape press statement about the walk states that participants would start at the Artscape Piazza and “observe a moment of silence before tearing tape from their mouths and collectively declare ‘Stop the Silence’”.

This is meant to be a “powerful statement against gender-based violence, discrimination and the silencing of marginalised voices”.
