The Junky Funky Kidz (JFK) gang was founded in Ocean View by Byron Ashton in 2014.
A Cape Town man who founded a dangerous gang in Ocean View and has since transformed his life, attributing his journey to rough childhood ultimately led him to seek love, a sense of belonging and purpose within gang culture.
Byron Ashton, 33, explained he grew up without his parents and was reared by his grandmother until the age of 13.
“After that, I had to go out on my own. I stayed with my paternal grandmother until she sold the house. After that, I went to live with my father until Grade 10 when I was 16 years old,” Ashton said.
After failing Grade 10, Ashton explained that his father told him to leave school and instead work alongside him.
